Worth The Hype? Nike Elite Graduated Compression Socks

For years and years compression socks were something I had only seen in hospitals, or on people of a 'certain age' on long haul flights. This perception changed dramatically when I came to the start line of the Paris Marathon earlier this year and a huge proportion of runners were sporting knee-high socks in all kinds of exciting colours.

Obviously, I was intrigued and needed to know more about these magic socks. What was it about them that made so many people want to wear them for their marathon?! There are many statements about the benefits of compression socks, but the main points seem to be that they:
  • Accelerate blood circulation to help muscle recovery
  • Reduce muscle vibration which results in less fatigue
  • Help to prevent injury
Pretty big claims right?

So, after having a look around I went out and purchased the Nike Elite Graduated Compression Socks in a very pretty purple. These were pretty bottom of the range price-wise at £26.99 from wiggle.co.uk (totally not sponsored, I just LOVE wiggle). Nike have lots of different colours available at the moment so go and check them out!

I've had these beauties for two weeks now and have had the opportunity to test them out in a few different environments.
So what do I think?

SIZE & FIT:
The first time I tried them on I was a little surprised about the struggle and two minute tug-of-war that took place, although I really shouldn't have been, I mean these are compression socks. If they're not tight how are they supposed to do their job? Once on though they fit perfectly. They are definitely tight enough, but they don't risk cutting off my circulation and I can keep them on for hours without any worries.

This may not be the case for everyone though, as Nike only give sizing according to shoe size, rather than foot size and calf size as I have seen in pricier brands. I'm a size 6 and I'd say my calves are a bit larger than average (if you need a measurement just lemme' know!), so if you're more slight in the lower leg you may want to look for a custom fit.

RUN BENEFITS:
Once out in these purple beauties I really enjoyed them. I've tried them on the roads as well as on a treadmill. They're comfortable, stay up and when outside have the added bonus of keeping me a bit warmer in the chilly weather here in the UK.

As for the 'scientific benefits' that runners are claiming in all corners of the internet.. I'm not so sure. I mean, don't feel like I can run forever in these, but that's not to say that they don't marginally reduce my muscle fatigue. As far as I'm aware my muscles didn't recover significantly faster than a normal training run, but it may have been a faster recovery without realising?

OVERALL:
If you're a newbie to compression socks and are thinking of investing in a pair, don't expect a miracle pair of socks that'll have you running like Paula Radcliffe by the New Year. However, do expect a comfortable pair of socks that will look pretty awesome and have your calves and feet feeling well supported. If you're contemplating the purchase, I'd say go for it.

The Big Question: Will I be running my 2015 races in these?
Yep, I think so!
